  1. Silent Bob Guess who's not scared of the orange button anymore?

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Aug 12 2009

I love playing Guitar Hero. Many of you know this already, and most of you know of my aversion to the orange button.

I've plugged along happily as "Mr. Medium" for quite some time now, happy with my place in the GH universe as a mediocre player. Most songs I can sight read on Medium and get high 90s to 100% on the first time through.

I've been on a mission to try get as many achievements possible for the various GH games given my meager skills. I've actually been able to get some Expert achievements if I do vocals, or play a really easy song on bass.

I mostly finished Hard on GHIII by myself. I needed help to get past the final battle with Lou. Now, most of the songs weren't finished prettily. I did OK the first few sets. Triples still throw me for a loop, especially when they come in quick succession with lots of changes. The last three sets, I never got higher than 3 stars on any song, but I did manage to finish each one.

I started playing GH:Aerosmith again recently trying to knock out some of those achievements. I figured the best I could do was 47 out of 49, and I'm getting close. I absolutely cannot do Expert career, and I absolutely cannot get the points achievement for Train Kept A Rollin'.

Trying to keep this long story from getting too much longer, there is a certain achievement on GH:Aerosmith called Toys in the Attic. To unlock it, you have to buy all the guitars from the vault : lead, rhythm and bass. No big deal, right?

WRONG! I've played through the Medium career five times now. I had to blow $60,000 to unlock all the characters for one achievement. That left me about $30,000 or so to buy guitars. I thought I'd knock that one out in fairly short order. Oh, no Bluto. I figure I'll have to play through Medium another three times minimum....OR I could try to earn mo' money by 5-starring a few of the easier songs on HARD ($1200 for a 5-star on HARD vs $600 for a 5-star on MEDIUM). It doesn't take a math genius to figure which will take less time.

Had I the skills of a RyuBlitz, a Dynafire, an Awolter, a ZMaine, or the like, I'd knock this baby out in no time flat. But I'm not them. I'm "Mr. Medium," remember?

Happily, I'll say this little challenge to myself has forced me to embark on the HARD career in Aerosmith. GHII wasn't that bad. Aerosmith is decidedly easier. I'm getting five stars on everything through the first couple sets, mix of four and five through the next ones. I got one 3, and I played again and got a 4.

I finished the HARD career on my first "band" in Aerosmith tonight. The most difficult part was the stinkin' boss battle with Joe Perry. It took me around five tries (DO NOT laugh!). After that, the last couple songs seemed easy by comparison.

I made another brutal boo-boo in my quest for this achievement. I bought most of the Guitar FINISHES instead of the actual guitars, so that puts me deeper into the hole I have to make up. Hopefully I can play through HARD a few more times and get this knocked out.

Who would've thought chasing a single stupid achievement would help me as a player?

I dig Aerosmith's music, but if you've played it as much as I have lately, I'm just going through the motions, not really enjoying the experience as much as I should.

So if you see me on LIVE playing GH:A, you'll know what I'm chasing. I'm past the point of no return on this one. I've committed too much time and effort not to see it through. I have to take breaks once in awhile and try out new stuff, like Ghostbusters, or sneak in some GH:Metallica (by far my favorite of the GH family).

Metallica on hard? That's a whole new ballgame. I don't know if my orange button aversion is completely cured! Wink

Nice work. I remember making the jump from medium to hard myself back in the day. It is daunting at first, but then your muscle memory starts to kick in, and you begin to hit more difficult songs with greater ease.

I agree with Dynafire, though. You should play whatever difficulty brings you the most enjoyment. Just don't count expert out simply because you "think" you aren't good enough. I used to fail songs on medium, and now I can 5 star a vast majority of songs on expert.

Anyway, keep up the good work, and like Dynafire said, if you ever see me online and want to co-op, feel free to send me a message.

I'm glad to see you making the jump to hard. You've been good enough to do so for quite some time, since every time I've seen you play on medium you hit pretty much everything. Also, I wouldn't say you CAN'T do expert career. I said the same thing to myself way back when. Just keep playing, and it will come to you - that's only if you WANT to play it on the harder difficulties though. Just do whatever makes you comfortable and gives you the most enjoyment from the game.

Beating GHIII on hard is no small accomplishment, you know. There are a lot of people that can't do that, so that's definitely an achievement to be proud of.

But anyway, congrats on getting that orange fret under control, and if you want to do a co-op career in GHA (I think you still get money for it), just hit me up on XBL.
