  1. Silent Bob First Vacation in 4+ Years

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Aug 16 2009

The biggest downside to being in business for yourself? Finding time to take a vacation.

With all the demands our computer shop customers put on us daily, we've never found the time to take more than a day off here or there sporadically over the time we've been open.

We decided this summer would be different. I'm writing this Chronicle as I watch my son and nephews splash about in the swimming pool at our hotel. We decided to stay relatively close to home by seeing the sights in Chicago.

We're staying in Schaumburg in the northwest suburbs. Our main reason: not having to pay the outlandish parking daily downtown. We made that mistake ONCE (B.K. - before kids) and won't make it again.

We've taken in the Shedd Aquarium, went up to the top of the Sears Tower and the John Hancock buildings. Even though deathly afraid of heights, I got out in the new glassed-in observation deck at Sears Tower. It's heart-stoppingly scary being up that high and seeing stuff move beneath you. The Orange Button has nothing on this! Wink

We also did the Science Museum (cool Harry Potter exhibit right now), the Field museum, and did an architectural tour. There are so many cool things to do. I think next time we'll try to do the Segway tour. Those people looked like they were having fun!

One of the game-related activities involved hunting down a gen-1 XBox game that my nephew Carter has asked for incessantly for the last two weeks. I don't even know if it's any good, he just knows he wants it. We managed to track down Predator:Concrete Jungle in a GameStop in Rockford, about 52 miles from where we were staying. Was it worth the trip? YES. Not only did we get him to quiet down about the game, but we got to visit another iGames game center in the process.

We visisted a place called Crazy Penguins. Now, we're pretty proud of our place, and rightly so. This center absolutely blew us away. It was terrific. Any of you in Illinois that haven't visited, I'd highly recommend it. They've got tons of PCs, XBox 360s, PS3s and Wiis, along with six pool tables for your enjoyment. Boobacca and I mostly played pool while the kids played (what else) Call of Duty.

They have a dedicated Rock Band room (with an Ion drum kit - nice!), and a good mix of large and smaller screens.

Like our center, a majority of the kids playing PCs were on World or Warcraft, and the XBox 360s were split between Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Call of Duty:World at War, and Left 4 Dead. Nice to know things aren't so different from place to place. Wink

We also got to take in District 9 at the local movie theater (30 screens! - the place was a bigger maze than Jordan Creek).

It's back to the grindstone Monday. I'm sure our phones at the computer shop will be ringing off the hook. Mom was nice enough to answer phones for us while we were gone and take drop-offs and allow people to pick up what had already been repaired. I'm sure she'll be glad to see us back in town too!

My boy starts school Thursday. It seems like the summer has just flown by! Monday night is "Meet the Teacher" night, so he's excited about that. I can't believe he'll be a fifth grader.

The only bummer about the whole trip? I'm dealing with intense back pain the whole time from a kidney stone trying to work its way out. The Vicodin takes the edge off but it's always there. Can't wait for this to pass (literally!). Ninja

Nice to see you taking a break. I know you've got a lot of stuff going on. I enjoyed reading that, but you'd still never get me up to the top of the Sears tower. Ever. Ever.
