First lemme get all my gripes out of the way so I can wax philosophical about the nature of war, war games, and tic-tac-toe (some of you may be a wee bit too young to get that reference).
PROS- CoD 4 is a fantastic story driven tour de force from stormy seas to VIPs. The story is backed up by some of the most realistic combat in recent memory. Great online game!
CONS- Too short of a single player experience in acts 2 and 3...seemed a bit rushed to finish the story. Would like a little more non-linear game play from time to time. Would have liked to see co-op story mode over XBL.
Call of Duty 4 is superb. There I said it! At no time during the game did I get bored with repetitious game design, or throw my controller with frustration at cheap enemies. In fact most of the game I was sitting mouth agape at what I got do do, or what the cut scene was showing me. Who can resist squealing like a 12 year-old girl that finally got that pony for xmas when your up in an AC 130 gun ship firing off howitzers and mowing suckers down with a mini-gun. I know I didn't resist! Or how about ALMOST making it out of blast radius on time....talk about a shocker. Sure the game play is linear, sure the enemies act with pre-programmed paths and aren't the brightest bulbs in the bunch. None of that crap matters!! Infinity Ward has grabbed you by the hand and is leading you to the promised land of gaming...one where the combination of story, mechanics, and level design all lead up to an engrossing whole. Little details like gunning a man down and watching him crawl away slowly...then stabbing him and the back and getting an achievement! Or holding off an army of angry troops with just a couple claymores, an AK, and a busted up brit.
Final Verdict: This is a game everyone that likes FPS should play. And if you don't like FPS- you should watch someone play it...the story is that good!
