  1. BEN Punch-Out!! (Wii)

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jul 17 2009

If you grew up with an NES, it's likely you enjoyed Mac and the adventures found in Punch-Out!!. This boxing game was fairly epic back then, so now it's back (of course) for the Nintendo Wii.

As I had hoped, the developing company (Next Level Games) and Nintendo did a very nice job with this games graphics. As SilverOnith mentioned in her recent Punch-Out!!-reviewing Chronicle, this game has a great feel of the retro version of this game while bringing the game back to life with some pretty nice looking graphics...at least for the Wii, haha.

The gameplay is almost identical to the NES version of Punch-Out!!. I realize the developers probably wanted to stay true to the roots of this title, but I would have liked to see more than just a few new characters and the added 2 Player functionality, added to a game that hasn't been released for ages.

Now I know what you're thinking..."what about all the new Wiimote functionality for the boxing element?!" Well, I tried that the first time I played the game, but VERY quickly turned the Wiimote on its side and played a more classic style...because it actually responded to what I was trying to accomplish.

As I was looking around, I noticed a lot of the big game reviewing sources were giving this game 9/10, A+, ect....now don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this game and playing a few of the classic characters mized in with the new guys, but the gameplay that this game gave me was comparable to how much I'm on this community website for only one day...around 2 hours?!

Maybe I need to experience the multiplayer before I shred this game's final review score, but without a real online functionality for the Wii, what's the point?

Punch-Out!! (Wii), you gave me some excitement, but like almost every other Wii game I've played, you got old fast and you highlights didn't make up for the $60 I wasted. I wish I would have rented you I'm afraid, but thanks for staying true to the original I suppose and here's your score...

    6.75 / 10

By the way, I'm VERY glad I didn't waste another $20 on the Wiimote's bright green boxing gloves that I almost got suckered in buying Surprised

Lastly, here's some general content about this famous series...I particularly enjoyed the fact that there's an arm wrestling game from this series that I had not heard of, haha!

Punch-Out!! is a series of boxing video games created by Nintendo's general manager Genyo Takeda, and his partner Makoto Wada. It started in the arcades simply as Punch-Out!!, including a sequel (Super Punch-Out!!), and has spanned home consoles, including the NES (Punch-Out!! / Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!), an SNES sequel (Super Punch-Out!!), and a Wii title (Punch-Out!!). The series also had a spin-off called Arm Wrestling which was released only in North American arcades.
