  1. BEN Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (My First PS3 Review)

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Dec 26 2009

Since playing Gran Turismo 3 on the PS2, this franchise has always been a racing simulation I've enjoy. The graphics are always hot, so when I saw Gran Turismo 5 on sale for $30, I thought I'd pick it up as my first PS3 game.

As a few of you know, I finally went to the Dark Side this Christmas, and received a Sony Playstation 3. It's likely I'll only use this console for BlueRay movies, but there are a few titles I want to check out. This was not a planned purchase, but I'm a gamer and my new toy couldn't go without a new game, ya know?!

Anyways, as I fired up Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, the graphics immediately caught my eye. They are stunning, but once the initial amazement fades, this game starts to let you down.

One of my favorite parts about Gran Turismo 3 on the PS3, was all the car customization you could do. I enjoyed beefing up my horsepower, tweaking my chassis, and even washing my vehicle and changing the oil for optimal performance. Now I'm not all the way through this game yet, but I see no signs of this depth being involved with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and have to wonder why a more advanced title in the series would go backwards in this department?!

This was a huge letdown and I'm faced with basically racing to build credits so that I can buy another car and race it exactly the way I bought it...weak!

There is online racing, but it wasn't that fun without a microphone. I realize that's my fault, but if you've ever started to dislike a game, you know the feeling of basically not caring and almost wanting the game to continue letting you down.

The graphics on this game are great, but I'm wondering what Forza 3 has to offer. Without car enhancements, a racing simulation is just a boring racing arcade game, no matter how beautiful the cars look on screen.

Don't spend more than $30 on this game, but to be honest, I'll sell it to you for $15, because it won't see much playing time after I beat this last class of races. I'll try and follow up on this video game review if/when I complete the game, but I'd give Gran Turismo 5 Prologue a 5/10 overall.

Thanks PS3, for missing your initial chance to impress me. I just hope Little Big Planet and Killzone 2 can revive me Wink

GT5 prologue is just that - a taste of things to come. The REAL GT5 is supposed to have all the stuff you've grown accustomed to with the other installments in the series.

You also can't judge the system based on the games. The hardware itself has nothing to do with the games that are released for it. It would be like saying the 360 sucks because Vampire Rain was the first game you played on it.

The PS3 does have a truly horrible online interface though. After playing on Xbox LIVE, it's hard to get into PSN. Everything is just so much more complicated. The upside is that it is free, of course.

I too also played this game, and found it to be boring. It started to make boring racing games fun. Simple experiences with the ps3 have always been lame, i have never been able to sit down and play a game over and over again.... thank you 360 for the joy of my life...
