I wish we would have shared more insight on this event before it was happening this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, but...

...starting on Friday, a group of 40+ designers, programmers, artists, and musicians gathered at Foundry Coworking to work ALL weekend on a game project of their choice!

TIGJam Midwest is an event that is held to allow game developers to come together and enjoy a dedicated weekend of development, shared insight, and fun. RyuBlitz was in attendance and I had the chance to stop by this event to see what was going on.

Josh, the event organizer, has worked to establish this neat event and it was great to see individuals hard at work, as well as teams collaborating to create an entire video game in only a few short days. Attendees were from all around Iowa and even a few from surrounding states. This is game development in a pretty raw form, and I enjoyed talking with a few individuals/teams to see what different people were working on...

    * I spoke to a team of two from 8monkey Labs, who were developing a neat bird and song connecting game.

    * I talked with a guy who was learning and working on a simple game being developed for the Android platform.

    * I took a quick glance at a dodo collecting game.

    * I also discussed the projects that another few guys were enjoying at the event, as well as their work at the largest game development studio in Iowa, Budcat Creations.

    * Lastly, and after some delicious sushi that was catered in, I enjoyed looking at what Zach/RyuBlitz and his team of 2.5 others were creating!

It was neat to see him leading the squad with programming and experiencing a big development milestone with them. They had created the 3D map for their bird collecting worms video game and I saw the moment where they found the right ratio for the bird to cruise though this newly created map. Through text messages, Skype conversations, and phone calls, I was able to follow along with Ryu's development progress, even with going out and enjoying the Lime Lounge on a Saturday night, lol.

(I kind of felt bad for my no work and all play, but whatev, haha)

Anyways, TODAY at 3:00pm, downtown at Impromptu Studio (300 SW 5th St., Des Moines, Iowa 50309), the numerous individuals and teams will share live demos of the work they've accomplished in the last 48 hours. I'm headed over there to checkout some finished work and if you're in the area, you're welcome to join us!

Congratulations again, to all those hard working folks at this event and it was a neat environment to share, even if I only went as a fan Wink

    About TIGJam Midwest
TIGJam Midwest is an indie game jam where creatives – programmers, hackers, designers, artists, or musicians – get together and make videogames in a weekend. For those who aren’t familiar with game jams, they’re similar to events like the 48 Hour Film Project or Startup Weekend. It’s called TIGJam because our group is part of the TIGSource community, which is a developer community for indie games.

Our game jams usually have a theme, and TIGJam Midwest’s theme this year is “proverbs,” proposed by Mark Doeden of 8monkey Labs. Participants will form teams, choose a specific proverb from a culture of their choice, and develop a game based on it. There could be games based on Chinese Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Christian proverbs, or more obscure cultures or religions.

The local community is encouraged to attend the show & tell at Impromptu Studio at 3pm-8pm on Sunday, where they will experience the games and meet local game developers. These won’t be your usual space marine shooters; expect raw and barely-finished games that explore satirical, brand new, or meaningful territory.

I wanted to make it out to this as well, last years was fun and this years seems to have been a blow out. Too much going on in the personal life though, but I'm glad Zach made it out and that you got to swing by as well, hope the presenting went well.
