  1. BEN Video Game Review - Red Dead Redemption

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jul 12 2010

If anyone knows how long it's been since I completed a campaign, story, or one player experience in a video game...the fact that I'm able to share this video game review for Read Dead Redemption is a pretty big deal, haha.

This game has been described at Grand Theft Auto with a old west back drop. With Rockstar Games as the developer, there are some familiar flavors of game play, but this game really shines on its own for sure.

This is the first Red Dead game I've played, but the story really picked up and made sense without any sort of back story telling. You play as a ex-gangster, turned good guy, John Marston in the early old west of the 1900's. After you're almost killed in the very beginning of the game, you're working for a new US government to find the gang members that left you for dead. By helping numerous friends (and enemies) along with way, I felt like Mr. Marston was pretty patient as he searched the wild west for these hooligans that needed a killing.

One of the characters that cracked me up, was a scientist that had the same last name as me, who also offered our main character a syringe of cocaine. This guy wasn't too involved with the storyline, but he had me laughing and taking screenshot. I even got him shooting up, lol

I was really impressed with how involved I got with the story and character development. The graphics and game play was a ton of fun. It felt like there was slightly too much wasted time riding through the countryside, but with hunting opportunities all over the place, I found myself enjoying the side tracking adventures that I had throughout the 22 hours it took me to complete the main storyline.

You could definitely spend 40+ hours with this game. There's tons of side missions and character development that those completionists may enjoy, so this is a title that's well worth your investment.

Without giving away the whole story, the game's title comes to fruition when you come back to your family and ranch. You end up getting back stabbed by the same officials you worked for most of the game and in a last heroic moment of protecting your family...sorry...I can't spoil it for you!

Overall, this sandbox video game is a treat. I'm yet to experience the multiplayer element of this title, but I'm sure the single player experience is the focus of a game like this. You'll find yourself really engaging in the story, while blazing your own trail in the wild west. I'd definitely recommend this game, would give this a 9/10 rating, and I think there's something for almost any gamer in Red Dead Redemption!
