  1. E3 2010 BEN Recounts & Remembers E3 2010

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jul 21 2010

    July 21, 2010

Today we hit our 5,800th GoG member and also have the deadline for submissions to our GoG Shirt Design Contest. With all these good things happening, I’ve still been naughty.

It’s been almost a month since E3 2010 and although photos say a thousand words, I have not shared any stories, thoughts, or insights about our time in Los Angeles! It may have been because we had a great media team this year and I felt less responsible to write about everything I saw, or maybe it was the two week vacation to Wine Country and then Florida that has me behind, or maybe it’s the big time career transition I’m working through, or maybe I’m just lazy? lol

Nonetheless, today is the day I will make it right!

With this being my third E3 in a row, I have to admit, I was not as eager to spend the money and make the trip. RyuBlitz insisted that we attend and I’m glad he did. This year was short and super sweet. I was only in LA for two nights, but the entire time was packed with excitement, fun, and good business opportunities.

RyuBlitz, Im Marksman, and I flew out of Des Moines and were greeted in LA by BasketBabe, mollyplease, and spartana15. We settled in and prepared to rock the opening day of E3.

With the major players having their press conferences before the actual expo got underway, news was already flying around before the show floor even opened. These press conferences and pre-party events are something I need to focus on more for next year, by the way.

Overall, the big buzz for E3 2010 was motion control, the initial ideas for 3D gaming, the Xbox 360 SLIM, Nintendo’s 3DS, and a few AAA titles that you would expect such as Halo Reach, Gears of War 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Star Wars Old Republic, Crysis 2, and booth babes.

    ______________

    DAY 1
We got to the LA Convention Center early and started to get our bearings. As both main halls opened, E3 blew us all away once again. It’s like sensory overload and to be honest, it’s hard to stay focused and on track at an event like this! We enjoyed the entire first day of E3 with developer meetings, new game demos, and lots of networking. Here’s a few of the companies and their games that we experienced on Day 1…

2K Games highlighted Mafia II, Civ. 5, SpecOps, XCOM, and their sports games.

Bethesda was sharing Fallout New Vegas, Hunted, Brink, and Rage.

Capcom had Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Dead Rising 2 (great zombie element in the booth), Lost Planet 2, MotoGP 10, Mega Man Zero, Okami 2, and a game that I shared specifically with Dynafire while playing it, Bionic Commando 2.

I met Naught Bear and mollyplease was in a quick schene for a video they were shooting.

EA Games was pushing their two awesome Star War titles, new sports games, fitness games, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and many others. Honestly, I didn’t spend much time in this developer’s area.

MTV Games had RockBand 3 spotlighted, with a few stations to show their new dancing game that will interact with the new Xbox 360 Kinect.

The neatest meeting we had was a private showing of Supremacy MMA, from 505 Games and Kung Fu Factory. This was one of the only times the entire 7-person GoG Media Team was in the same presentation and seeing a game so early in the development process was awesome. I asked a bunch of questions, but almost all of them were answered with the common phrase, “we can’t discuss that at this time”, haha. Casey, Daryl, and Ricci were great guys and although the afternoon drink plans didn’t work out, that was one highlight I won’t forget.

Day 1 did not end after the show floor closed. The GoG Media Team was beat, but I had not gotten my fill of LA nightlife, so I cruised over and met up with hastr0, Walter from Astro Gaming, folks from GameDunzo, Zach from Gamers Outreach, pro gamer Prod1gy X, Athena Twin from PMS Clan, and our friends from SFX360 as they hosted a pretty sweet industry after-party at a club called Suede. This was a fun chance to meet more good people and enjoy fine vodka with friends. My night adventures were not as wild as last year, but it was still a good time and a good way to end Day 1 at E3 in LA.

    ______________

    DAY 2
Day 2 came around quickly and we were focused on getting to the big ticket items first. Although you were only suppose to have access to one private “Fast Pass” presentation from Microsoft, I was greedy and found a way to get access to both the Halo Reach and Gears of War 3 private presentation. You may have seen that YouTube video of the entire Halo Reach presentation, but both of these experiences were great. Seeing the most anticipated games this early and on the ground level of development is indescribable. Knowing that the people who are sharing the games you’ll be playing for years to come, is a unique opportunity and what I personally enjoy most about the E3 experience.

Along with meeting Method Man before his performance with Redman and really hitting as many games as we could, Day 2 was especially fun because we didn’t have as many scheduled meetings. This allowed us to troll around the expo and take in as much as we could. A few developers, games, and new technology that I remember the most would have to be…

Halo Reach, from Bungie obviously, is epic. I’m glad I recorded the whole presentation. That two part video on YouTube has seen over 15K views, lol!

Epic Games was focused on Gears of War 3, which is better than ever, but they were also sharing Bulletstorm and a few other titles.

Konami had Rapstar, Conduit 2, and collaboration with a Mexican developer on Lucha Libra AAA.

THQ had Homefront leading the charge, but UFC Undisputed 2010, Red Faction Armageddon, Lego Harry Potter, and WWE Smackdown vs. Raw were also in this year’s showcase.

Ubisoft was pushing Assassin Creed Brotherhood, Shaun White Skateboarding, and basically too many others to remember.

Activision had Call of Duty: Black Ops, Tony Hawk: Shred, and so many others.

Onlive was making big announcements around this whole new platform for online gaming.

Nintendo was focused on their 3DS, but also had a few new throw back titles that caught my eye such as Golden Eye 007, NBA Jam, Sonic, and another Zelda game.

Sony was stuck on their silly Move controller, but also had titles such as Grand Turismo 5, Medal of Honor, Killzone 3, The Agency, and Infamous 2.

Speaking of the joke that is Sony’s new Move controller, I think Microsoft stole the motion control show with Kinect. We saw Project Natal at E3 2009, so it was need to see the progress and all the hype surrounding this hands-free approach to gaming.

You could tell 3D gaming is here, but I sensed that next year it will be more prevalent.

Day 2 was another exciting day at E3 2010, so after the show floor closed, RyuBlitz, Im Marksman, spartana15, and I strolled through downtown LA and met up with Walter from Astro Gaming and Zach from Gamers Outreach for a nice dinner at remodeled fire house in downtown called Engine Co. No. 28. After a great meal, the team was tired out and just couldn’t make the after-party happen. You know and you can bet I was disappointed, but nonetheless, we cruised back and got to work updating the GoG.

    ______________

    DAY 3
This was the day I left Los Angeles to come back and pickup my wife for vacation, but I still slide a few last minute games in. The rest of the GoG team stayed all day and it sounds/looks like they had a great time at the Video Games Live concert to conclude their E3 experiences.

The LA Lakers played two home games (in the Staples Center right next to the LA Convention Center) while we were in town and would end up winning the NBA Finals this day too, so even with this year's E3 coming to a close, the city was alive as always.

    ______________

Overall, E3 2010 was intense, overwhelming, awesome, exciting, and another great year of seeing what’s happening and what’s about to happen in the video gaming industry. Although this year’s social adventures weren’t quite as wild as in past years, I will say that I felt more experienced than ever before. Being my third year in a row to attend, it’s been neat to see the event progress and also understand how things work within such a crazy environment.

E3 2011 is a long time away, but I have to wonder if our GoG community can ever support some sort of industry E3 after-party. Many of you saw or heard me talking about having a GoG party on the rooftop of The Standard Hotel in LA. This obviously didn’t happen and they had private events both nights, so I could even check it out, but maybe someday…someday our GoG community will host all the big players and good friends of E3 in downtown LA! Maybe E3 2015?

Anyways, thanks again to the seven-person GoG Media Team. It was great to see our team expanding as we share what’s new with everyone on GatheringofGamers.com. RyuBlitz, ImMarksman, Spartana15, BasketBabe, RxySurfChic, mollyplease, and I rocked E3 2010 and we hope to do it all over again next year…

Definitely a week to remember, especially when I can go to Gamestop and give advice on the upcoming releases.

You have a good overview and the games we got to demo were fantastic. I personally loved the trip! Looking forward to Michigan, and connecting with Zach out there.
