Player Chronicle -- Posted on Apr 06 2010

Alright I've waited to post on this until I was able to fully understand the game itself. Now I will start by saying that I have never played a single BF game until this one, the reason behind this is that I have always been satisfied with the games I'd been playing. Now MW2 has just been a big disappointment and I needed something new, therefor I bought BFBC2.

I came into BF a complete noob, with most of my knowledge of FPS games coming from Halo and Call of Duty series. I knew close to nothing, just picked it up and started playing. At first I was extremely frustrated, I hate getting dominated in games because I'm usually the one on the top of scoreboard. I went through my entire Recon class getting completely destroyed by long distance machine guns. By the time I hit around 12 hours played time and I got my XM8 Prototype for my Assault class I started to understand the game much better. I'm currently trying to finish maxing out my Medic class and I have a total of 27 hours played now. The game itself is amazing and extremely realistic in most aspects. Although being myself, I had to find some things I could complain about, so here is a small list of complaints:

    1. 4x Optic Scope - Makes any machine gun, sub machine gun, or light machine gun a long range weapon and in return ruins sniping in the game.

    2. The reward system, being higher level in this game and having the guns with the scopes is extremely helpful, way more so than Call of Duty has ever been.

    3. Tanks - I don't mind the tanks if they aren't abused, but when a team only goes for the tank and just blows up all the buildings on the map, it just starts to piss me off.

    4. Maps - The maps in this game are great and pretty well balanced, but DICE really needs to come out with more maps soon to keep people interested since there are very few.

    5. Matchmaking - Two problems with the matchmaking system, one is that the game will constantly replay the same map over and over and over, I played the same map 6 times in a row before it finally gave me a different one. The 2nd problem is with "Leave Game" system, you literally have to quit the game in BF to get out of it. You don't get penalized but it's a strange way to get out of the game and in most FPS games you would get penalized for leaving mid-game.

This might seem like a lot and I'm sure there are more that I haven't discovered, but this game has way too many good qualities for me list. You will just have to try it out to find out, but here are a few words of advice to get you enjoying matchmaking a bit more. First, don't give up, just accept that you will get your ass kicked in some games when you first start off, don't fret, it happens to everyone. Second, play with friends, this game is really a team based game and going in by yourself and expecting to win, just won't cut it, especially when 75% of players you will get put in a squad with don't have mics.

That's my take on BFBC2 and I'd give this game a 4.5/5 and suggest you rent it to see if you like it. I'm always a cautious buyer of new games. If it trips your trigger then go ahead and buy it because this game is a fun way to get away from MW2 and Halo.

Thanks Marksman, this was a neat review of a new game I've also been enjoying. I agree with much of what you said, especially how it's more enjoyable with friends...which may be the reason I'm enjoying Battlefield: Bad Company 2 so much lately?!

Did you see my own video game review of this title? How about the GoG Forum discussion area?
