  1. Im Marksman Halo: Reach BETA

Player Chronicle -- Posted on May 09 2010

Hey everybody, Marksman here. Since I've been an avid Halo player since Combat Evolved, I decided that the Halo: Reach BETA deserved my opinion.

Firstly I would like to say that Halo: Reach is a new game all together in the Halo series. It has a brand new feel to it that is not similar to any of the past Halo games. The movement is a little different, but what makes it more unique then past games are the armor abilities.

The 4 armor abilities consist of:

    Armor Lock

    Invisibility/Radar Scrambler

    Jetpack

    Sprint

Armor Lock gives you a moment of invincibility while building up an EMP burst to lower the shields of any enemy within a short range. Invisibility and Radar Scrambler is pretty self explanatory, but there is a catch. The more you move the easier you are to see. Jetpack is of course a jetpack, which allows the user to have a limited airtime. Lastly, the sprint armor ability gives the player a limited time to sprint, which in return offers good rush tactics, further jumps, and fast getaways.

These armor abilities are pretty evenly matched, but there are some problems, Armor Lock is all powerful at close range and uncontested when challenging power weapons. Invisibility/Radar Scrambler is built for the defensive player, this load-out with any power weapon is an automatic juggernaut, and unkillable if the player moves slowly throughout the level. Jetpack and Sprint are both even abilities that are well balanced. Sprint is a good way to escape bad situations and is helpful to rush power weapons. Jetpack is a tad unfair because you can rain hell upon your enemies with grenades and rifle fire, but when in the air you are a very easy target for team shot.

Weapons now fire more realistically by having reticle bounce when firing. Although this is great that Bungie is going for the realistic approach, I believe it makes the game quite a bit harder to get headshots. The beatdown is absolutely ridiculous in Reach and definitely needs to be tweaked, especially if Bungie is going for the realistic touch. The sword cancellation in Reach is good touch in my opinion because it makes it so the sword isn't such an overpowered weapon. If the sword was always a 1 hit beatdown it would constantly be abused by pairing it with either invisibility or the sprint armor ability.

This is the first installment of the Halo: Reach BETA chronicles. More to come soon!
