Player Chronicle -- Posted on Apr 08 2008

I say: Jet Pac.. and you think... What?
I say: SabreWulf and you think... What?

I myself was not aware of the fact that, what would become Rare, had made these titles...
I have recollection of playing them, but (ignorant and... *young* as I was"), I did not really think of which company made what.

It turns out that (after some investigation on their "earlier years") Rare was the mastermind behind these titles.
I could go on rambling about all the titles they've released over the years for various computers, but I'll leave that to the "hardcore/veterans" out there to argue about.

Let's face it; Rare didn't *truly* make a name for themselves, before they made a game which seemed "impossible" (at the time); Donkey Kong Country....

Sure, they've made a name for themselves, during the 8-bit era as well (R.C Pro-Am; noted on the forums, by BEN, which got this rambling started); but come on.. Am I the *only one*, who didn't notice them (except for the title of the game) before Donkey Kong Country?
Sure they made a couple of MegaDrive/Genesis (Sega) titles as well, but...

Donkey Kong Country? What's so special about that? you say....

Well... If you happened to own a SNES sometime during the mid-90's, you've probably heard of (or better yet) played Donkey Kong Country.

Apart from being one of the "best" platform-games on the system (not totally biased, since it was the nr. 2 best selling game, apart from Super Mario World, on the console); it utilized more colors than the console could handle, by using "pre-rendered 3D-graphics" in it; (if you've ever layed your hands on this game, you know what I mean) (mainly refered to as "ACM"; Advanced Computer Modeling", by Rare/Nintendo)

Ok. You're not "old enough" to have been impressed, nor having tried the: Donkey Kong Country series..
"I was born with a N64 in my hands", you say.
Well... there we have "instant-classics" as; Killer Instinct (also reached the Arcade-halls, AFAIK), Banjo-Kazooie, Golden Eye 007, Perfect Dark and Star Fox Adventures, to name a few.

What's all this got to do, with my Xbox, you say?

Well, after the N64 success-line-of-games, Rare was bought up by MicroSoft (which I don't know if I am grateful of or not), and created such games as; "Conker: Live and Reloaded" and "Grabbed by the Ghoulies"
These games were classic in every way, but Rare would not stop there....

Those of you (like me), who bought the Xbox360: "bundle" package, featuring: Forza Motorsport 2 (MS) and Viva Pinata, is bound to have (at one time or another), tried out Viva Pinata. The first game Rare released for the X360.
Sure it seems more like a "kids game", then applied to "all ages"; me being around 30, when I first played it, got hooked.
Then I noticed; Perfect Dark: Zero and Kameo, only to realize that Rare was not only "still in the game" (after 26 years of development); but they were still one of the best companies out there.

"At the moment" they are developing Banjo-Kazooie 3 for the Xbox360
And although they have expanded enough to be able of making games for "any console they like"; Xbox owners should not only be proud, but feel honoured that this particular company will continue to make "some of the best games" out there for our otherwise (biased) console, which is run by a man who already have ca$h enough (Bill Gates)
