  1. JackDaniels624 Left 4 Dead Versus mini-guide for those new to the infected side

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Dec 16 2008

This was the guide I made after the L4D game night thing. Versus mode can be really painful for someone playing for the first time and not really knowing what to do, so I thought I'd be a nice ninja Ninja and write a bit about it.

Imagine Counter-Operative in Perfect Dark 64. One team plays a normal scenario without any changes on their part as survivors. The other team (this is where things get interesting!) play as one of 3 special infected at first! Theres usually 2 people as hunters (Hunters are like hoodlums who can jump very far, and can tackle people causing small damage at first, but the multiplier builds up quickly and can do some serious damage if no one helps! The reason someone must help is because the survior has no means of defending themselves and can only scream and take the damage. To save someone from a hunter, I suggest shooting them off seeing as hitting them doesn't kill them and have a chance of pouncing on someone else) , one as a boomer (Really fat guys, very low health, can barf on people to blind them and cause a swarm of zombies to attack the survivors with the puke on them. Survivors should try to kill them from farther away distances as boomers are like those flood that expode, except instead of causing damage they get bile on them! Also a melee hit will send boomers bouncing back quite far so thats what to do if they get close, smackem and wait for them to get out of range of ALL SURVIVORS and shootem!), and one as a smoker (These guys are jerks if used right! Their attack is basically a long range hunter one. They have a tongue that shoots across a respectable distance and pulls a survivor towads them. When they get close enough the smoker constricts them causing more powerful damage then the hunter upon them. When they die they leave behind a cloud of smoke, which I don't think has any point other then making survivors cough, which is a really annoying noise! A tip for survivors is that when you first get grabbed by a smokers tongue, you have a really short time to shoot it's tongue to prevent it from pulling you. Also if one of your teammates is grabbed, you don't NEED to kill the smoker, in fact I've found it better to shoot its tongue and get the survivor free and then kill it. They have the most health of the common special infected so make sure you see the smoke cloud instead of letting it recharge it's tongue!). The special infected (now this is so the new folks don't get frustrated) are only supposed to cause little damage at a time to where them down (don't expect a kill the first hunter pounce!). Ambushes, distractions, and a well played boomer barf are a great way to cause some serious damage and down some people! This is done by having a hunter or two hiding out of site, while a smoker spawns behind the survivors and starts to yank one away. Then the hunters tackle a survivor while the others are trying to blast the smokers tongue, and then a boomer barfs on those tackled by the hunter. It's a dirty tactic since the zombies surround them making it VERY hard for survivors to save their comrade from serious damage! Of course if the survivors are excellent at staying together and watching eachothers backs this plan is nearly impossible...Luckily for the infected humans make mistakes!

Now there is one other infected that you can be but only at certain times. It is the tank, the steroid freak turned zombie! These guys are strong and don't die quickly (unless the survivors really know how to work together!). The Tank not only does tons of melee damage, but it also seperates survivors by knocking them back hundreds of feet, not to mention off of buildings! And they can also knock cars into the poor survivors (if theres any around of course). They also can (at any time) pick up a chunk of the ground and throw it at people! But as long as the survivors keep moving back and shoot the tank, it will go down fast! For survivors, unity is EVERYTHING!

Some final tidbits I could think of are that theres 4 survivors, and 4 special infected in a full game. You do not get to choose what kind of special infected you are, nor who gets to become the tank. The tanks appear at certain areas chosen at random in each level, so expect them to come in different place. And of course, STICK TOGETHER!!!
