  1. JackDaniels624 First thoughts about my shiny new PS3!

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Dec 23 2008

Now of course, this is all 100 percent opinion. I unfortunately have to write this because other wise people will think I'm forcing my views, which I certainly do NOT intend to...

Anyway, I got the bundle with the 160GB harddrive and Drakes Fortune. I got home and did the usual plugging everything in, and one thing I noticed was that after I turned on the power switch, all I had to do was slide my finger on the uhh...other power switch thing, which was pretty cool! Then I went to plug the controller in, and I personally prefer wired controllers, so I used the USB thing it came with. The thing was that the wire was laughable short (litterally, me and my friend got a good laugh out of it!), but luckily the charge was full so it wasn't too big of a problem. I think I'm going to have to pick up a charger or something, but I'm not 100 percent on that (I hope I can charge it by plugging it into the system) since theres no way I'm gonna be able to sit that close to my gigantic screen! Then I had to do the usual setting up a profile which wasn't too bad...I got a bit irritated setting up the time due to my minor OCD but then I found out I could sync the time to the internet so that was a HUGE relief Laughing . Then I had to create my online profile which was easy and I must say some of those avatar pics they have are pretty cool (I went with the smiley acorn Smile ). Immediately after I tried going to that Home beta thing, only to be told I needed to update my system. Not a big deal but I really wish they would have had a link to update my system right there instead of heading back to the main area to find it. After I finally updated my system I tried going back to the Home thing only to get a connection problem which was extremely irritating, and I still haven't been able to get on it...I was really looking forward to checking that out. So now me and my friend are a wee bit frustrated and I decided to put Drakes Fortune in. I only played the very beginning part which was alright, but it took me a while to get used to the wierd PS3 controller. I'd just like to say that I see no difference between the PS3 graphics and the 360 graphics, and anyone who makes a big deal about one side being superior (I could see someone saying slightly better or something but not much better)...and if you do you annoy me. Shortly after the pizza arrived so we ate, and then hopped on MGS4! It had an 8 minute install time (which I'm sure was important) was a bit annoying since that's one reason why I don't play too many games on my PC. But it had a cool video of Snake smoking which was pretty awesome (but I don't understand how when he lit up his cig, he had ashes at the end of the cherry already...yeah I notice stuff like that Laughing ) When it was done installing I got to play it for an hour or two and I must say it is AMAZING! One of my favorite parts was when i started the game, it was like I was watching TV for some reason. I saw an interview with David Hayter (Snakes voice actor I believe) for like 4 minutes before I realized I could change the channel (not knowing it was a TV at the time Laughing ) and then I browsed the other channels, and finally ended up playing the game.

Anyway I don't wanna go on for too much longer so I'll conclude here. Overall the systems good, but I still think that the 360 has a much better Live system, better controls, funner games, and much more bang for your buck! However I do believe that the PS3 is better then the Wii...Much better...And the PS3 is a good system, except I think I'll only be playing console exclusives on it.

Congrats on your new acquisition! You'll have fun with it for sure. Just don't get too overzealous with your dance moves around female avatars in Home or they'll think you're a perv. Wink

As I said before, we got rid of our PS3s for the game center because they just didn't get the play that the 360s got. I don't know if LIVE has something to do with that, but I'm pretty sure it has a little something since so many of these people want to connect with people they've already established online "friendships" with and not have to make new connections.

Even the supposed "system sellers" like MGS4 didn't get the play we had hoped. My only negative was a bit of bad timing on our part - we ditched 'em right before Little Big Planet came out. With all the play that level creators (Far Cry 2, among others) and physics sandbox games (Garry's Mod on the PC) get in our center, I'm sure this would have been a hit. Still not enough to justify its expense. Plus it was hard buying games for both systems to keep the content fresh. Some brand new games for our PS3s got NO play, while their 360 counterparts paid for themselves in a week's time. Weird.

At least I don't have to hear, "Can I get Halo 3 for the PS3?" anymore! I tried to explain a thousand times it was an XBox 360 exclusive and they'd have to pick something else. "OK - how about Gears of War for the PS3?" D'oh!!!!

This has made me jealous. I too, would like to make the PS3 jump. Initially just for the BluRay player, but of course the exclusive titles as well...Little Big Planet most notably.

I'll be sure to know when I make the jump, but for now I'm glad you're able to enjoy this shiny new toy of yours.

I assume the PS3 sections of the GoG Forum are going to heat up a bit more with you behind a PS3 controller once in awhile now Very Happy

... you took me back to the day I got mine! I too laughed at the USB cord, and was quickly frustrated with the system updates and game installs. I'm surprised you don't like the controller, I was thrilled with the similarity to the PS2 one (Unless of course you're not used to that either) Wink

One cool thing Sony added with a recent system update is the ability to auto power-off your system. In the case of system updates it will simply shut itself off when finished (If you want it to). But you can also set it to power down in increments of 2,3 and 5 hours of inactivity, which works great for charging your controllers or downloading PSN games! I'll tell you too that you cannot charge the controllers on just any USB port. I actually bought a micro-surge protector with USB ports in it, thinking that I could plug it in to the wall behind me and play while charging that way, but no luck! I'm sure there's a good reason for that......

Anyway, congrats on your shiny new baby! Keep an eye on the ~PS3 Clique~ for our game nights!
