  1. JackDaniels624 I will explain why as a metalhead, I don't really care for Metallica...

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Apr 02 2009

It's obviously no secret, I've mentioned it quite a few times. Metallica, while being a great band and very talented, just never really caught my ear...And for more reasons then just their music. I've given a few reasons, and I'll restate them. Of course I'm gonna be listing some more I haven't said yet. This way it'll be offiicially "out there" and hopefully provide those of you who read it with more insight.

Okay I'll start off with the usual. I know a handful of people who think Metallica is the ONLY good metal band. Not only that but it's the only one they've actually listened to! It's even worse that none of them know who MEGADETH or DAVE MUSTAINE is despite Dave being a former member of Metallica! And while watching the "Some Kind Of Monster" dvd, my brothers friend said "Oh so he got kicked out and then started a no-name band! LOLOLOLOL!!!". Wow...Megadeth's a no name band eh? Again, I've known too many people like this!

I can understand why people would like thrash metal, and not like something like Death or Black, since I know that most people mainly listen to the vocals and lyrics in songs and don't like "screaming". Totally understandable, it's an acquired taste, and I completely understand why people would only listen to the vocals since it's easier for them to understand since its meaning is more clear. Not everyone realizes (or in some bands I've heard on the radio even do!) is that instruments play a huge part in the mood of a song. Not to mention that vocals are usually the front sound in a band...Not always the loudest, but easiest to hear. All this being said, some people like Metallica and not Death metal because Metallica actually sings w/o any death growls, or shrills, ect...What I can't understand is why not listen to some other thrash as well? I personally don't listen to too much but Megadeth definately comes to mind!

Another thing that bothers me about Metallica is those metal fans that DO listen to more metal, but say if you don't like Metallica then you don't like metal! Honestly you can't say James was a tiny bit off pitch, or Lars missed a bass note, or Kirk's solo was a wee bit sloppy at the end without one of these fans freaking out as if some one said their music was about as heavy as "The Backstreet Boys" or "NSYNC".

And my most modern reason...The one I don't think I've ever mentioned before. Putting Metallica on Guitar Hero, or Rock Band as DLC seems to make the devolopers think that they've satisified the metal heads out there. Of course Rock Band came out with the Earache Thrashpack...despite the name only "Thrasher" was actually a thrash song, but it was the first time (well, not counting GH2 which had Laid To Rest, which was such a terrible cover, or Thunderhorse which was awesome!) to have a truly metal flavor to it, brutal vocals. This is probobly the most legendary pack that was ever released for the metal community! But it wasn't released until March 18, 2008. Mainly because metal fans had gotten their DLC early with the release of the Metallica DLC November 20, 2007! That was the day that Rock Band was released...So for 4 months, or 15-16 or so weeks there was nothing in the game that represented metal as it's seen today. Basically it's just annoys me that companies think that throwing Metallica in a game means they can keep metalheads at bay from spamming them with hate mail about being rejected for a while with Metallica which also let's them rake in the cash at the same time.

In fact during that time before the Earache Thrashpack, I clearly remember saying I wish they had some brutal metal in Rock Band only to have people say "Shut up! There's Metallica! Jeeze metalheads just can't be satisfied can they!?!?"...Ugh...Can you sense my annoyance? Although I must say that I appreciate Harmonix for giving us songs by Devildriver, Machinehead, At the Gates, The Haunted, Children of Bodom, Lamb of God, ect. to satisfy me.

I can totally understand why metal isn't released on a weekly basis, let's face it, it isn't mainstream music (well, Metallica is, I've heard them on 3 different radio stations at work), but it does have a large cult following! Bigger then most people think! Quite frankly I'm glad it isn't mainstream because there truly is a feeling of brotherhood amongst metalheads! It would just be nice if people appreciated it more...And realized that THERES MORE METAL THEN JUST METALLICA! So needless to say I don't expect any metal band getting their own game from one of those 8 or whatever band specific Guitar Hero games Activision is making...Unless it's something like Dragonforce (again...not as bad as mainstream as Metallica but please something else besides another clean vocals band!).

And there you have my little rant about Metallica. And yes I do like a few songs of theirs and can listen to most of them (I like Battery, used to like Enter Sandman but was overplayed on Rock Band and the radio), and again, are extremely talented...But there's more out there folks! Just give the other stuff a chance, maybe the vocals will grow on you...maybe not. I suggest listening to some metalcore and letting a mix of screaming and singing to see if you can tolerate it, and if you can, great go explore! If not, well, that's fine I understand, as long as you give it a fair chance!

I hate to even bring up the Metallica vs. Megadeth fan wars (but Jeezy already did, so I guess we already went there), but I just want to say that I enjoy both bands. If I was forced to be able to only listen to one of them for the rest of my life though, it would be Megadeth. I just think Megadeth has more interesting and diverse riffs, and the vocals just sound better to me. Everyone's entitled to their opinions though. If you don't care for Metallica, Megadeth, or any other bands, that's your call. I don't care for Van Halen for example, and no amount of fanboyism is going to change that.

Anyone who has never heard any of these bands that have been mentioned in the chronicle, as well as the comments is missing out on some great music regardless of who you'd classify as your "favorite" band. I'm seriously surprised no one's mentioned Iron Maiden or Judas Priest yet. :P They're not exactly metal, but they're both fantastic. We need The Trooper in Rock Band, darn it.

Just imagine if the next Rock Band expansion was a Megadeth expansion. You'd have the classic Metallica vs. Megadeth wars getting mixed into the GH vs. RB wars, and it would be fantastic to watch people tear at each others' throats. Very Happy Also, aside from the Thrashpack, there is a lot of metal DLC available now. Let's not forget about the Roadrunner pack and the Peace Sells album. Wink

I do know what you mean Jack. I find myself becoming less interested in Death Metal, however. I find I prefer more melody in the vocals, and consider vocals to be an instrument in their own right. So in turn I'm more drawn to bands like, Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, Dream Theater, Coheed and Cambria, etc.

9/10 however, you'll never hear a guitarist/drummer as talented as some of those Death Metal bands have. I've always just assumed they all sold their souls to the devil. Wink

And Megadeth>Metallica any day of the week.

Hey, I'll take you up on your offer. Let me know a few songs, and I'll write a review chronicle. Also, since you asked for some track suggestions, I would honestly recommend listening to the first four albums in their entirety. Kill 'em All was a great thrash album; every song is a heavy-hitting shredfest. Also, Cliff Burton's bass solo track will give you a new view on bassists. The other albums (Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, ...And Justice for All) definitely diversify the style, but I think it was definitely for the better.

Tracks you may not have heard yet, but should:
    -Orion (Great instrumental)
    -Motorbreath
    -Harvester of Sorrow
    -Frayed Ends of Sanity
    -Dyer's Eve
    -Wecome Home (Sanitarium)
    -Fight Fire with Fire
    -Creeping Death

I'm sure there other tracks that would be a better fit for you, too... I just can't remember them right now while I'm stuck in class. Smile

Also I try not to do this, but Kirk Hammett's personality is a bit wierd to me...I mean like riding horses and stuff? I usually don't let musicians personalities or beliefs come into play (I hate politics in any form but still listen to S.O.A.D. and Lamb of God), although some people I like more for their personality, like Mike Portnoy, Steve Harris, and Bruce Dickinson.

Also if anyone IS willing to give heavier metal a chance let me know and I can try and suggest some bands. On the other hand if anyone has any Metallica songs they'd like me to listen to, just let me know and I'll give my honest feedback when I get the time!
