  1. JackDaniels624 A claification about last night...

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Apr 20 2009

Okay recap, last night I joined a 360 Live group with some fellow Gogmates. And after a while the song from Underoath on Rock Band 2 came up. I've only listened to part of the song, but to my knowledge Underoath is a Christian Metalcore band.

And from the parts I've listened too, I heard a mixture of clean and harsh vocal styles, which is pretty popular in Metalcore (which is Hardcore Punk music with some influences of metal thrown into it, so needless to say I don't listen to too much of it, cuz I hate Punk music in general). It eventually got me to the point where I said "It would be a better song if he didn't sing" and obviously a few people agreed. This is where the clarification comes in.

I did not mean that I am in anyway disgusted by harsh vocals, in fact what I meant was that the singer shouldn't SING at all, which makes sense to me, but everyone has a different lens in which they view and understand things. What I meant was that it should be harsh vocals throughout the entire song (I know I know, boohoo poopy screaming, I've heard it all before and understand why you don't like it, but understand that there are those of us who do enjoy it, which I'll explain).

My reason for this, is simply because (and I could be wrong, I haven't listened to the whole thing, and what I did hear was a LONG time ago, so feel free to correct me on this one) I personally find it annoying to be singing (clean vocals) during parts where it doesn't reflect the mood of the instruments. For example that "Gives you Hell" song. I've heard its the ultimate F-U song, but when I listen to it, the only thing that remotely sounds like an F-U song is the lyrics. Sure theres some chords durning the chorus, but IMO they still sound pretty weak, and the song quickly became a totally generic, unartistic mainstream piece of crap to me.

And just because I don't like a song, doesn't mean that I don't appreciate the artistic expression in it. For example that Kid Rock song (I hate Kid Rock) about Summer Time. It's got the nice Sweet Home Alabama instrumental parts, and he sings about his past memories and everything seems to flow together nicely. See, while I don't like the song I respect the effort he put into writing the song and making everything come together! Music is much more then just a singer folks!

Anyway, I just wanted to clarify that, and mention "To each his own" once again...And of course Kids In America is still totally awesome and I'm still willing to fight anyone who says otherwise!
