  1. JackDaniels624 Metal in the mainstream!?!?

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Oct 13 2009

Okay, so with Brutal Legend being released today, and I can't sleep yet...I decided to write a chronicle about the whole metal uprising I've noticed, and exactly what this uprising is.

First a little history lesson. Metal, which most people know as "screaming" music with lyrics that worship satan, once was extremely popular music. Unfortunately for those of us who are not posers, this metal was "Glam" or "Hair" metal, which I admit has it's charms, but overall looking "pretty" and power ballads ARE NOT ****ING METAL! So as I've always done, I will simply try to avoid discussing hair and glam as much as I possibly can.

Now that that's outta the way, I can continue. Most people think that Black Sabbath was the first heavy metal band of all time. I agree with this to an extent, however there simply is no denying that Led Zepplin and Deep Purple played a large role in shaping heavy metal. While I wouldn't say they were heavy metal bands, they still deserve credit for what they did, but yeah Black Sabbath is overall what I consider the first band to focus on heavy metal. And from what I've observed, Black Sabbath is pretty popular amongst classic rock and metal fans alike, which is just one way that metal is actually, you know, somewhat mainstream.

Now I could go into how popular nu-metal was in the 90's and today, but I'd rather avoid that too (again, I do admit that I like some. I find it easy to get into but it usually gets stale quite fast. Plus most of it makes me wanna strangle a sea lion). I will say however that bands like SlipKnoT did draw in quite a large amount of people who would later discover metal more true to it's roots, afterall I don't expect any random teen to discover Atheist or Suffocation without having some background in metal first...Even if it is nu-metal.

Then Brendon Small made "Home Movies" and eventually made his way to Adult Swim. There he made "Metalocolypse" with the fictional band "Dethklok". This show was the highest rating season premiere in Adult Swims history. I recall an article where Brendon talked about how metal already had a fanbase seeing as how metalheads love the show, and even people who don't like metal still love watching the band make choices based on how metal they are. Of course the show also introduced metal to thousands of people who never gave it a chance before, sort of like seeing things in a new light you could say. Like nu-metal, this show has spawned thousands of metalheads, while at the same time many posers as well (I Dethklok live last year...there were definately some posers...I shoved one out of the way and damn did it feel good!). Even the band had a little video explaining moshing to all the newcomers to metal, it was hilarious!

And now today, Brutal Legend has been released! And from what I've played in the demo, this game already proved it's worth by bashing fake metal right in the first video! While I must admit some songs on the soundtrack made me want to hit Tim Schafer in the face (specifically Dragonforce, Firehouse, Lita Ford, and Ratt), it still has pleanty of good stuff with clean and harsh vocals, showing the broad range of the genre and disproving those who claim "ITS ALL SCREAMING!!!" Plus this way anyone who only listened to clean vocal metal and had their interests piqued by this game will subconciously listen to the harsh vocals and possibly have their old opinion turned around. Of course, they could just ignore it and such...Anyway I think this games gonna be another one of those classic scenarios of breeding more metalheads and posers alike...

And that was a very poorly and quickly written chronicle about metal in the mainstream! Now blast some Morbid Angel in your back yard and burn something!

Amen. All hail the power of metal! I was slightly disappointed that there was no Maiden listed in the soundtrack.
