  1. JackDaniels624 The Top 5 Bass Players Featured in a Rock Band Game!

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Oct 25 2009

Here we go again! Same as last time, all an opinion and whatnot, yadda yadda yadda...Let's just start shall we? No? When then? Okay I'll pretend you didn't just say that and continue anyway...

5.Paul McCartney-This is probobly one of the only times you'll see The Beatle's Rock Band appearing on one of these lists, but Paul (and the rest of the members) deserve a special mention. Maybe I'll go on about that later, but for now let's focus on Paul's bass playing. Honestly I think saying "Taxman!" would be enough, but I suppose there are too many neophytes who focus solely on difficulty to understand the majestic sounds of Paul's bass in the song. Sure Paul's work may not be the most technical when compared to these days, but looking back it was quite creative for his time, and without it...well bass players may have been recognized even less then they are today...A sad thought in my book...

    4. Flea-Though I admit, I don't listen to The Red Hot Chili Peppers, I know enough to know that Flea is a damn fine bass player! His style is original and definately stands out. Emphasis on the "stands out" seeing as how rare it is for a bass player to do so. Also ever wonder why "You Oughta Know" has such a difficult bass line? Yup, Flea!

    3. Geddy Lee-I had an extremely hard time deciding weather this bass/vocalist/keyboardist from Rush should be in second or third place, but decided that I had to see this from a bass perspective only, even then it was a very tough decision. Geddy is just one of those guys who said "You know what? I think I'll make the bass cool!" and he did! Most bass players are just around to keep a steady rythem going, but not Geddy! He's right up there with Alex Lifeson! I've also noticed it seems like more people know of him then they do of Alex Lifeson, which may be due to also playing the keyboard and singing...Which I know I said I wouldn't focus on, but it definately takes talent to multitask and play with such precision. And that's why Geddy's on the list!

2.Steve Harris-Another bass player who lives in the spotlight! Steve Harris is definately one of the reasons why Iron Maiden has made it as far as they have. He may be very rythmic (he originally wanted to be a drummer), but no one forgets the galloping sounds from "Run To The Hills" or "The Trooper", or the masterpiece known as "Hallowed Be Thy Name", and that's just the surface of Steve's fame! In every song he plays with such power and energy that it's hard not to notice it! Such fast fingers as well, I've seen him play some pretty fast songs, yet never once have I seen him use a pick like I've seen many other bass players do...Again this is all about the bass, but I just had to mention he's also written some of the most amazing lyrics of all time! UP THE IRONS!!!

    1. John Myung-Of course, Dream Theater makes the top of the list...Did you really expect any less? Anyway John's an awesome guy. I've met him in person and he thanked me! It was pretty cool. Also there's a bass solo in the song Metropolis...Where he plays a bass solo (it's from one of his tutorials I saw on Youtube...). Sorry I couldn't resist that...Anyway John's quite the enigmatic guy, not too much is really known about him. On stage he occassionally does a couple of stage moves, but for the most part he stands his ground with lighting fast fingers plucking those strings with ease, and after a show he warms down. No joke, he WARMS DOWN after playing a show! So take his amazing technical talents, the fact that he warms down after a show, and add that he used to practice playing for four hours a day, doesn't hog the limelight, writes bass lines that fit perfectly with the feeling of the song, all with an enigmatic essence around him and what do you get? The most amazing bass player ever featured in Rock Band!

And there you have it...My personal top 5 Rock Band bass players! The honorable mention of the day goes out to Lemmy Kilminster of Motorhead for obvious reasons!
