As one of the highlights and major buzz words at E3, Fallout 3 was announced and available for demo. The First Person Shooter/Role Playing Game/Third Person Shooter was shown at Bethesda Game Studio’s press conference and then was available within the company’s private room.

Our team missed the press conference, but we were able to get into the private room, for a 30 minute appointment to play this much anticipated game. This bad boy is set in Washington DC, in the year 2277. After 100s of years after a complete atomic bomb wipeout, the RPG element of this story is how your character is developed after he chooses to escape a vault that was established for the remaining humans after the blast.

The demo was dumbed down a little bit, so you could escape the vault easier, and the developer also mentioned that you actually start the game by being born. I spoke with Pete, who is the VP of Public Relations and the main Project Manager at Bethesda Game Studios. He was excited to share this game and with the release coming in Fall of 2008, they still had work to do and was not allowing cameras behind the private room’s walls.

That being said, it was very interesting, because while we were in our appointment, a guy from Xbox Live came back and was able to do an exclusive interview with the developer (who also did Oblivion) and took some hard to get screenshots! Look for that on XBL and maybe you’ll be me in the background, haha.

Fallout 3 has a unique retro, yet futuristic flavor to it and one thing I found unique was the tracking of level progress while you work your way through the levels. Another unique element of Fallout 3, was the way they applied hit damage percentages to certain areas of the body right before you shoot the ememyb. For instance, a body shot was 30% damage, while a head shot was 85%, and a leg shot was only 12-25%. This was cool for those all important head shots!
I would say that this game will do fairly well, because it’s been giving a nice amount of hype, but honestly, there were so many FPS-type of games at E3, that Fallout 3 looked cool, but I could see myself skipping it for some other major FPS titles. If you do check it out, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed, but you can only master so many shooters, ya know?!

Although this was not as personal as many of the private rooms and more hands on gaming with Fallout 3, it was cool to see this nice looking title in action. With not a whole lot of swap being passed around E3, it was fun getting a special cola called Nuka Cola and an old school film viewfinder with screenshots from the company after we left. The photo with a huge life sized character was also a treat!
