  1. Seripha Surprisingly Less Difficult Than I Had Anticipated (Bioshock)

Player Chronicle -- Posted on May 14 2009

I just completed the game Bioshock for the first time ever. Not only did I beat the game, but also I managed to obtain all of the fifty-one achievements in this single run through. To my surprise, I didn't find it too terribly difficult. I don't have the exact number of hours I put into the game as the game doesn't have a counter, but I would guess I notched somewhere around 25-30 hours.

Let me first say that almost everything from the story to the game play was spectacular. I'm sure that I'm preaching to the choir here with this statement as most of you have surely already played this amazing game. If you haven't, you need to go buy it and play it now. You won't be disappointed.

I found, however, that even on the hardest difficulty setting there were few parts of the game that gave me any real trouble. Money in general was exceptionally easy to obtain, and I found that my wallet was full a good handful of times. Ammunition was a slightly more difficult situation as many different types were needed in order to properly mow down, incinerate, and/or bludgeon my foes. I definitely wouldn't say, however, that there was any situation where I found myself completely without ammunition forcing me to reload an old save. A generally thrifty mindset combined with good use of the Telekinesis plasmid would be more than enough for anybody to maintain a healthy amount of ammo throughout the duration of the game. I also found the final boss of the game very easy. I went into the fight with nine first-aid kits and eve hypos and only used four of the former and one of the latter. I probably could have used none seeing as how there was a health station in the same room as the fight. Couple this with my bulging wallet and one has a recipe for success.

The one part of the game that I did find difficult was fighting the Rosies. Their accuracy was nearly perfect, and only two shots from them was enough to kill me. So, unless I had at least seven or more first-aid kits, I usually wouldn't even attempt to fight them.

Lastly, I figured I would say something about the hardest achievement in the game. I, of course, would be talking about the Brass Balls achievement. In order to achieve this, one must complete the entire game without using a vita-chamber. These chambers allow you to effectively re-spawn to it upon death. Now answer me this. In a game where one can save upon a whim as often and wherever they want, what is the purpose of these chambers? If they weren't in the game at all, I most definitely would not have even noticed or cared. Simply loading up at my previous save after death posed absolutely no hindrance to my game progression at all. So, in my opinion this achievement is far easier than its point amount reflects. And, furthermore, to anyone who has been intimidated into not attempting this achievement, give it a try. You might be surprised.

All-in-all I have very few gripes about this game. Then again, I can think of almost no games that I can find absolutely nothing wrong with. As such, I give the game a solid 9/10.

I have to tip my hat to RyuBlitz for letting me borrow this game from him. Actually it was more like him showing up with the game and telling me I needed to play it, but, nonetheless, much thanks! Now you can have your game back and attempt that terribly scary Brass Balls achievement. Wink

    Cheers,
    Seripha

Well, I guess I gotta be the one...I actually did rent the game and, well, I don't know if I wanna say I didn't like it, I think it was just a bad time for me to play it. All I remember was a lot of stress while playing it, but I think it may have been because I was in a private chat while playing the game...Wierd I know, I question if I like anything mainstream Laughing . I am seriously considering giving it another shot though. Oh and nice review!

I agree with most of what you said, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's not necessarily difficult, but it makes up for it in terms of overall quality and fun. I actually played through the game 4 times to get all the achievements, but it never really felt like grinding and I enjoyed every playthrough.

Also, trap bolts and electric buckshot work wonders against Rosies and Bouncers.

I agree with bigwes32, great video game reviewing Chronicle here for sure!

I'm in the minority as well, because I have not played this game much more than watching Andy play it a little bit when it first came out. With the second Bioshock on its way, this may be the time to catch up and play this well-liked game!

Too bad there's no word of a package deal where you can get this original one when you purchase the second Bioshock. Owell, good games deserve to be sold seperately I suppose Wink
