  1. Seripha Let Me Tell You How You Feel About This Game...

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jul 23 2009

I was just over in the forum commenting about how I had heard bad things about Transformers 2, and I realized that this constituted a new chronicle about reviews: the opinions given to us before we actually interact with a given media. I have always been reserved about letting reviews affect me too much, but it wasn't until this last year that I truly started to realize how much I disagree with reviewers. Now, don't get me wrong. I am not here to say that reviewing is bad. Contrarily, I believe that reviews can be very useful. I am, however, here to point out how arbitrary I believe reviews are, and, with that, how much I believe we too hastily take them as "fact."

Some of my favorite games of all time have been given horrendous reviews by websites such as IGN. Sometimes I wonder if they intentionally hire the MOST cynical people they can possibly find. I mean, is a job requirement for this place to be a pessimist? I would be the first to ridicule developers for losing sight of their roots, and yet I seem cut them more slack than some of these reviewers do.

The same thing goes for movies. I seem to constantly come across poor reviews that have been given to movies I thoroughly enjoyed. Nowadays it seems like if a movie is not the next Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings, it gets kicked aside for not being an eleventy billion dollar budget film. And that, my friends, irritates me.

I can't tell you how many forums I have come across with people flaming in anger arguing over which game is better or worse. Ultimately, what it comes down to is that every single person is going to feel differently about any given game or movie. What gives anyone the right to tell you how much you did or did not enjoy a game? This is why as of late I have attempted to tone down my arguing about what games are good or bad. All I can really say is what I did or did not like about the game and how I felt about it. Any arguing beyond that is utterly pointless.

I decided long ago to give every game and movie I am interested in a try regardless of what anyone tells me about it. I, also, urge everyone to do the same. Don't empower the reviewing companies to dictate what the masses will and will not try. Play a demo, rent something, just don't let someone else affect YOUR opinion.

    Cheers,
    Seripha

I absolutely agree. It depends a lot on the who the reviewer is. For instance, I trust Dynafire's reviews far more than the reviews written by the schmucks over at IGN.

It's always easier to complain, than take the time to compliment, ya know?

That being said, I agree that it really comes down to personal preference for what YOU like. I think the reviewing element is nice to have, but know who's reviewing them and understanding their general tastes is what hopefully allow our GoG Chronicles to be a little more enlightening Wink

It seems that Ryan Eft, Dynafire, and Jack Daniels would have some thoughts on this matter Shocked

Great thought though and I'm looking forward to seeing you this weekend for our video game event!
