Player Chronicle -- Posted on Oct 31 2008

After for the first round, I thought I would be better in making the entries slightly more specific, so first, the games I actually had the chance to play. That works, yeah?

Some of the lines were just obscenely long, so I didn't play much unfortunately... it would've taken all day just to get the chance to play Monster Hunter 3, for example. So I bounced around the booths and played what I could without waiting for an entire day. The first I played was a title called "Let's Tap," a Wii-specific title that's played by - basically - tapping. The Wii controller was placed buttons-down on top of the game's box, so each move is easier for the Wiimote to respond to. You control a small vector-human a-la Rez on a two-dimensional track as a race, every light tap being a step forward and every big tap being a big jump. To get from point "A" to point "B" the player has to tap alternately with their fingers (at least, that was the easiest way... tapping with both hands) to make the little man run, and hitting the box to leap over any obstacle that entered your path. And yes, it's THAT easy.

The courses themselves were amusing, filled with balls of lightning, tightropes (which you had to slow down for so your character won't fall, presumably to their death), hills, among others, but the backgrounds were the same every round... which kind of kept it feeling like Rez, but at the same time it was almost disappointing that I was just staring into a black abyss every level. Competing with another player was extremely fun, which was necessary; the game is NOT meant to be played solo (like so many Wii games). But with someone to bomb around with - the game supports four players - it's a lot of fun.

Another title I had the chance to play was... well, this is one of those times I wish I read Japanese. It was a bullet-hell shooter, which always gives me goosebumps... a staple in gaming, and no one makes them better than the Japanese. I doubt this one will make it to the States, as the screen was almost as filled as GiGa Wing typically was. It handled well, and the enemies... well, they were the standard fare of tanks and planes, set in what looked like a run-down future.

Over at the Hudson booth, Tetris Party was one of the major attractions... mostly because they didn't have too much else to offer. It's already available on WiiWare, but I took the time to inspect it as a complete whore for the game. It handled like the NES version Nintendo released, made even more evident with the way the Wii controller is modeled, and with enhancements like the ability to hold a piece to save for later, a battle mode similar to the DS version and a co-op mode (there's even a mode using the Wii Fit board!), if you've got a Wii and in need of a way to play the classic, you could do a lot worse.

I'm drawing a blank at the moment as to what else I got to actually get my hands on instead of just watching... told you, the lines were just too long for so many titles - even early in the day they were just flooded! But I did get to look over people's shoulders, maybe that's what I'll cover next... the heavy hitters!
