  1. TGS2008 My TGS Experience, Part III: "The Back Room"

    Player Chronicle -- Posted on Nov 06 2008

    There were three massive halls in the space that was the Tokyo Game Show, and one of them, what I've deemed the "back room" was likely the most interesting of the convention. The first two were filled with games, promotions, demonstrations, giant displays, even raffles and performances... but the final room from the entrance was filled with things like game schools and souvenirs.

    Yup. Game development schools were a big part of that final room, along with the handful of food stops and souvenir stands for some of the more popular companies of the Japanese gaming landscape. Nintendo wasn't at the convention, but some of their better known characters were; one booth was stuffed with awesome Mario, Yoshi and Kirby plushies (I bought me a smallish Kirby for ¥1000, high-quality too!), while another was packed with Irem goodies (R-Type made a few appearances, once with level one adorning a towel!), another with Capcom gold (Megaman 9 was ever-present), among others strewn around and showing some... odd... things (one booth looked like they had a BUNCH of airsoft guns for sale, modeled after famous game guns).

    The food was pretty much standard Japanese fare, with a lot of noodle and beef bowls and rice, and I was kind of in an American mood (hey, gotta love the standards like hot dogs, eh?)... had to get out from the show floor to grab one, so that won't count. But thankfully on the floor there were drinks too, the OTHER standards like Coke and Fanta... along with NATCHAN ORANGE!

    Look it up and find it if you can, it's so, so tasty.

    Even the game development companies - every one of which I'm sure was located in Japan - were handing out information and bags of nuts with their info. Bags of mixed nuts... I don't know who had that great idea, but it gave me a good laugh as I put it into my bag walking around. Many others were handing out regular little brochures and pamphlets, none of them really grab-worthy... mostly because they had fewer pictures, and I can't read Japanese. ^_^;;

    All-in-all, even with the games blaring in the other rooms and the demos running non-stop, that room was a very interesting diversion, showing how seriously the Japanese gaming companies take their business. When you're recruiting at a game show (which is GENIUS in my opinion, hopefully other countries do a similar push!) it just shows that you want to be around, and find new titles, and discover new concepts anywhere and everywhere. It was a really nice diversion when the lights and noise reached a breaking point.

    Great chronicle! I really wish I could go to one of these huge shows myself.
