  1. Link Professor Layton and the Curious Village Review

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Dec 25 2008

Riddle me this: Why is Professor Layton and the Curious Village the smartest DS game ever?

If you answered, "Because it's packed with tricky puzzles," sorry! You're wrong. Good guess, though.

The correct answer? Because it deftly combines the two most popular genres on the system and creates something new and unique in the process.

The formats in question are brain games (a niche that has exploded into popularity on DS) and adventure games (which have experienced a sort of portable renaissance thanks in large part to the DS' touch-screen interface). To date, though, each has been content to keep to itself; Brain Age does one thing, Phoenix Wright another, and only in Layton do the proverbial twain finally meet.

Rather than simply toss 10 dozen mindbenders at players, Layton wraps them in a quaint, classically styled adventure. Admittedly, the game's puzzle and story elements likely wouldn't stand well on their own -- the puzzles are excellent but often rely on certain tricks of language that, once spotted, become transparent in subsequent iterations; the adventure game is unrepentantly simple and linear. The genius of Layton is that they don't stand alone. Instead, the two game types work together harmoniously, resulting in something altogether more entertaining than its base components.

    Review: 10

126 puzzles, and an awesome plot twist later, i am happy to report, this game was AWESOME!

I know someone out there is going to see if i am sick.... because yet again... another game gets a 10...
Could it be that people can still make good games?
