  1. Link Worms XBLA Review

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jul 08 2009

Worms is a turn-based strategy game where you pit teams of worms against each other in all out warfare. Bombs. Guns. Sheep. Anything is fair game to be used as a weapon. This unique and funny take on turn-based combat has proven to be a cult hit on the PC over the years, and now it makes an appearance on the Xbox Live Arcade. It is a bit bare bones compared to some of the other versions of the game out there, but it is still amazingly fun and easily worth the 400 MS points.

Worms on the XBLA is a bit of a tough game to review. On one hand, it is severely lacking in features that made entries in the series on PC, N64, Dreamcast, and PSone so darn fun. It is missing a ton of fan favorite weapons, and there are only a limited number of backgrounds, teams, and voices that other versions have. And, yet, on the other hand, I would say that in spite of these drawbacks, Worms is still probably my favorite game so far on the XBLA.
Why is it my favorite? One word: Longevity. Most XBLA games are forgotten as soon as the next game comes out the next week. I don't see that happening with Worms. It is so addictive and so fun and by its very nature it has a ton of variety since you play on random maps with random item drops, and you can adjust the difficulty to your liking. No two matches will ever be the same. And when you add in the multiplayer aspect of the game, you can and likely will be playing this game weeks and months from now.

Worms is a turn-based-strategy game where your team of four worms is fighting against other teams of worms. When it is your turn, you can move one of your worms around and then use an item or a weapon. Weapons include guns and bombs, missiles, airstrikes, fireballs, punches, and more. Some items allow you to teleport, use a jet pack, swing around on a ninja rope, and there are defensive items such as a girder to protect you from incoming attacks or a blow torch so you can tunnel your way out of (or into) a tough situation. The idea is to take out the enemy teams and be the last one standing. It is just as simple and silly as it sounds, but darn if it isn't fun.

Would it have been better if there were more weapons and backgrounds and all that stuff? Absolutely. Is it still a very good game in its current state? Yes. I highly recommend you at least try out the demo.

I remember liking Worms a lot better in my college/PS2 days. I have to wonder if the fast paced games of today have killed my interest in this semi-boring game?!

I do enjoy the conversation during the game though, so it's not all bad and I enjoyed beating you a few times on XBL Wink
