  1. MediocreShannon Dead Space scares me.

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Dec 19 2008

I just rented Dead Space because I was hearing a lot of buzz about the game. I know on a few gaming websites it got 9/10 which far exceeds what I thought it would actually get.

I am usually really reluctant when it comes to these types of games. I haven't heard much about it so I didn't want to buy it. I knew it was a third-person shooter. I was expecting something more like Mass Effect. Of course I was wrong.

Little did I know that it was a survival horror game. Here I am running around with my cool space suit on not knowing what kind of baddies I was going to fight. Without giving anything away I found out the really crappy way by not really paying attention to my surrounds. Totally decapitated. It was sick. Very, very sick.

Now that I know what type of game this is I notice that I haven't used the run button as much. Instead I creep around corners with my gun drawn and turn around at every single noise.

Believe me, this is not a game for the faint-hearted. There are many times I sat here and thought to myself, "OMG! I'm gonna crap myself!" It doesn't help when the lights in the game and flickering off and on continuously and you hear the big baddie running in the air vent above you. Or the fact that when you enter a room quarantine turns on and now all the doors are locked. Basically, you are screwed. They are all around you and you can't even leave the room.

Gameplay is simple. Little tutorial texts will pop up and tell you how to use your gun. Guns that give the hero the ability to use kinetics to move objects or stasis to slow down baddies so you can shoot of their limbs. They also have a wide-range of guns. Although I have yet to beat the game I have checked out the store. I just unlocked the purchase of a flamethrower.

If you do have to melee, (pray to God you don't!) there is a way to swing your gun in a baddies general direction. Hitting him pushes him back and makes his brains splatter on your nice suit. It is effective in those times when your plasma bullets have run out. They also have a slight curb stomp that is effective for those crawly baddies with no legs that just keep bitting your ankles.

I could tell you more about the story if I paid any attention. I am usually crying like a little baby during the dialogue because I just freaked myself out way too much. For instance, there is a part in the game where you hear a loud thumping. You see a shadow of someone in the next room where the sound is coming from. When you get closer you realize what it is and it is sick.

This game has a lot of blood and gore. If you like survival horror games this one would be awesome for you! You should check it out. I recommend it.

Remember, in space no one can hear you scream. Well other than that big baddie who wants to eat your decapitated body. I am sure he can hear you.

We had kids at our game center clamoring for this right before our Halloween lock-in. The ones who tried it loved it, although some didn't have the patience to get to the "meat" of the game where it starts to turn scary.

Yeah, when you're sweeping a room with just the flashlight at the end of your gun and one of those toothy creatures leaps right at you, the "pucker factor" definitely ramps up.

    Thanks for the review!

I have not played Siren: Blood Curse. I am one of those people who usually stay away from survival horror unless it is Resident Evil. I will have to check it out though. Zombies scare me. They want to eat my flesh.

As for multiplayer, I have not seen anything about it so I am not sure if they even have it.

"Dead Space is Good." (the end)

haha, this is what I'm talking about and great game review here! This was also a game I knew about, but for one reason or another it didn't make my "Need To Purchase/Play" list. I see I may need to update this list and give Dead Space a try.

    Is there any multiplayer elements?

There was something about this game that just didn't appeal to me. Perhaps it was because I too thought it was just another FPS. Sounds like the kind of game you have to play in the middle of the night with no lights and surround sound!

Have you ever played Siren: Blood Curse (PSN)? It's a survival horror game set in a small Japanese Village with Zombies! VERY creepy, I have barely played it yet, but it is cool! There was a demo on the Playstation Store if you're interested!
