  1. BEN Halo 3 – Chapter 1

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Sep 26 2007

With no campaign experience yet and around 20 online battles under my belt, I want to start my own video game review of Halo 3. I know, I know, it’s the biggest and best video game release ever, so I’ll skip all that! Here we go!

In my entire video gaming life, I can not remember a game that had so much hype and so much disconnected corporate support. The day I saw Pontiac try to relate their cars to this game, my thoughts on how far a game’s marketing could go was changed forever. Mountain Dew has their “Game Fuel”, which is gross, and who knows how many other fortune 500 companies got a piece of the Halo 3 marketing action! I know the hype has paid off for Bungie and Microsoft, by like $170 million something, but I’ve got to wonder if Pontiac sold any cars, thanks to their support of Halo 3, haha.

Anyways, besides the incredible marketing job Bungie/Microsoft did before the game released, let’s talk about the game itself…

After visiting a local video game retailer and seeing the amazing long and excited line at 12:01am, September 25th, we left my reserved cop and jumped over to Wal-Mart and picked up a copy without waiting in any line. We brought this coveted masterpiece home and sat down to begin an endless quest of Halo domination.

The first few games online was a mix of not knowing which games to play, having no clue on where anything was in the maps, and experimenting will the new weapons. As we started understanding the general gameplay layout I noticed a few things that are the guts of this Chapter 1 Review.

    1. The battles between players seem shorter and the guns seem to run out quicker.

    2. The grenades seem more condensed.

    3. The added shields and tools seem cool, but hard to master.

    4. It takes us awhile to connect with a game.

    5. For some reason, the graphics on 1-2 maps remind me of Gears of War.

    6. I think the more detailed choices of game types is nice and will allow players to get exactly what games they’re looking for. The way you can choice the connection priorities is pretty cool as well.

    7. The general teams game are 5v5 and the straight rumble pits only have 5 players, which I like the team differences, but enjoy more people in the room when I’m by myself. I suppose it could cut down on the pandemonium, but that’s part of the fun sometimes, isn’t it? Maybe a choice of room size would be nice. (maybe you can do that and I just haven’t found it yet, haha)

    8. The world map to show you where people are hooked up from is neat. I’ve attached a photo of the first game we played and the only people who had it was the East Coast!

    9. I like the map veto function. Once people actually know which maps are what, that may be a nice tool.

    10. I like the fact that after an online game, you can structure a party with recent players. I think that allows you to continue playing, without the confusion of sending a friend request, joining a party, and hoping they don’t start without you.

    11. The friends menu being on the Xbox platform and not in the game will take some getting used to, but it seems more efficient.

Overall, obviously I love it and can’t wait to try out every little detail! The skill I bring from Halo 2 definitely helps in Halo 3, but there are so many different aspects, there is plenty to still learn, so here I go, onto playing more!
