  1. Astraea360 Modern Warfare 2 Not Quite HD

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jul 31 2009

I have never written a chronicle before because I am so busy all the time. However I am taking the afternoon off and I think this warrants discussion. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will run in 600p like the first Modern Warfare. I have been hearing so many people complain about how they just don't see how Infinity Ward could do this (Halo ODST is also sub HD). My question to everyone is this: 720p and 30fps or 600p and 60fps?

While I am a huge fan of all things HD, I rarely even watch a movie anymore if it isn't Blue Ray, is it really something to make the entire game a dissappointment to fans of MW? You have all seen the campaign (amazing) and the multiplayer gameplay (knocked my socks off and made me even a bit teary eyed I will admit). Modern Warfare 1 looked great and if I had too choose 720 HD with a laggy 30fps or 600p (307,200 pixels less than 720p) with a much smoother 60fps I think that is a hands down 60fps for me.

So anyway if life were perfect you would get the game at 720-1080 HD at 60+fps. I say deal with what you can get and stop crying, but that is just me. Sorry for making you listen to my rant.

    What does everyone else think?

Interestingly enough is that the 600p and 720p resolutions have different aspect ratios as well.

    720p is a true 16:9 (1.78:1) ratio where the 600p is 15.3:9 (1.71:1) ratio.

basically this means that a frame of MW2 is the same highth its just a little bit shorter then a normal HD frame.

    Very interesting

Wonder if that has anything to do with it?

I got you Jack on the higher prices. I just use my blockbuster subscription and get them for the same price. Then I buy the few movies that are worth buying (Dark Knight).

I don't think true HD gaming will become available until the next generation consoles or even the ones after that.

Each console has a native native resolution (Xbox360 is able to put out 480p, 720p and 1080i). Just like every console has a native resolution so does every tv. 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. And again each game is made at a native resolution, most games are rated between 480-600 with the occassion 720.

If all three do not match up to the same resolutions then your console and your TV will have to use a ton of processing to convert to the native resolution of each piece of equipment. Which is where your problems with lag can occur. Expecially if they make a game at lets say 720p with only 30fps. Come on 30FPS!!!! Go Infinity Ward for being smarter than the average bear. I can barely stand latency on the Activision servers let alone a game running 30fps just so 1 out of every 20-30 (don't know actual number) xbox players can notice hey the quality of the graphics is just a tad better and more importantly I can say I am playing in HD.

Ben, PS3 games already use blu-ray as their medium of choice. Smile The reason for the bottleneck is the processing. Trying to add more detail makes things more and more complicated, and eventually you're going to bog down the system by having too much for it to calculate and draw per frame.

I've honestly neve been able to see the big deal about HD and Blu-Ray...Slightly better quality for a higher price...

    That was an informative rant!

I wasn't aware of this situation, but I too would take the higher frames per second, versus a full HD experience. I wonder if the space on a normal disc is the main issue in trying to jam so much content into that medium.

You'd think they could make the best of both worlds with the BlueRay discs that are allowed on the PS3...HEY...that's it! The PS3 can sell their systems by giving their games more space to fit on the their sacred BlueRay discs! lol
