  1. Grandmaster Meio PC Engine/Turbo Grafx-16 = Retro shmup heaven

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Nov 01 2007

Turbo Grafx-16. Also known in Japan as the PC Engine. Loved in Japan, virtually ignored in the US. While many westerners believe the Sega Genesis was the system to have for shoot em ups, TG-16 had dozens of these types of games and many of them are awesome arcade ports. R-Type was phenomenal at the time it was released. The sound and graphics were almost arcade perfect compared to the Sega Master System version. Sidearms while lacking co-op also looked amazing and get this, the sound and music is better than the arcade original. Galaga '88 (Galaga '90), Dragon Spirit, and the Japanese sequel Dragon Saber are all faithful ports too. In Japan, Konami released better than perfect ports of Gradius and Salamander (Life Force). There also were nice exclusives too. Hudson Soft and Compile (makers of cult classic shooters like Zanac and The Guardian Legend) released Blazing Lazers and the Star Soldier sequels Super Star Soldier, Final Soldier, and the legendary Soldier Blade. Air Zonk is an awesome Bonk's Adventure shmup spinoff. These shoot em ups are definitely worth checking out. Wii owners shouldn't hesitate to download these whenever they have the chance.

Now we get to the CD-ROM and Super CD-ROM games. Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder are definitely no brainers. Macross fans should note that Macross 2036 is a worthy addition to their library. Gradius II is awesome as always. Spriggan is just like the Genesis game M.U.S.H.A. and it is a good thing. Seriously folks you won't believe what America missed out on. NEC really dropped the ball on us Westerners. It is stupid decisions like these from bigwig corporations that make me buy games from Japan most of the time. After all aren't we getting sick of tired what they are telling us what we wouldn't like?

Go to www.pcenginefx.com and be prepared to be shocked about how we all got neglected by NEC.
