Prototype? Yay or Nay?

I've asked several friends who've played this game and hardly any has been a positive response.
I'm sort of dumbfounded, i anticipated this game to be 'AWESOME' as it all the gameplay trailers looked really fun and interesting to the maximum.
If anyone who's reading this has given it a play could you let me know what you think? I've considered buying it but it seems that rental is a better option.
