  1. Misfit8488 Misfit's Tekken 6 Review

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Nov 05 2009

For my first chronicle, I will be reviewing Tekken 6, the latest entry in the popular fighting series.

Tekken 6's story really doesn't make a whole lot of sense, pretty much like every other fighting game out there. Jin Kazama wins the 5th Tekken tournament and gains control of the Mishima Zaibatsu and tries to take over the world. His father Kazuya isn't so thrilled about that, because he was also planning global domination. So, Jin sets up a new tournament in order to defeat Kazuya and the G Corporation. And this is where the Scenario Campaign mode comes in. After a brief introduction showing the results of each tournament, you take control of a Lars Alexandersson, a leader of a rebel group trying to stop both Jin and Kazuya. Another new character Alisa Bosconovich joins Lars in his quest to bring them down.

The campaign mode is basically a beat 'em up game with a Tekken fighting system thrown in. It may sound cool, but unfortunately most of your characters moves are limited and you will be using the same moves and combos over and over again. The levels are very short and take about five to ten minutes to complete. You can break crates which give you gold, healing items, treasure chests and weapons which will help you out a bit. The camera isn't very helpful and it usually gets stuck in the background or it'll be frozen in an awkward position and it makes playing these levels somewhat frustrating. Weapons are extremely useful as most of them kill each enemy with 1 hit. Each stage has a boss battle, which are part of the cast in the game. The length of the campaign isn't very long and won't take you too long to finish. After finishing it you most likely won't feel like you accomplished much.

But besides the Campaign mode, there are many modes of play. For offline modes, there is Arcade which includes infuriating boss fights, Ghost Battle, Versus, Survival, Time Attack and Practice. There is also the robust customization mode which has tons of items you can buy with the money you've earn from winning matches or playing the Scenario Campaign. Each character has an array of clothes, accessories, and some oddball items which make your characters look completely ridiculous. Laughing

Then there is the online play and it includes Ranked and Player matches, along with leaderboards for Time Attack, Scenario Campaign, Survival and each character has their own leaderboard for every mode. The online play is pretty smooth and there are few instances of lag. But when there is lag, your moves are delayed quite a bit, so you will be waiting about a second for a move to register on screen.

The controls and gameplay are precise and every character has a massive move list for you to practice and master. Each button you press controls a limb of your character, and pressing two buttons simultaneously can execute a throw move. Certain characters also have counter attacks and parries which make the gameplay more deep.

Graphically, Tekken 6 is a beautiful game, character models are greatly detailed and the arenas are just as pretty. Animations are smooth and look awesome. But, the Scenario Campaign level graphics are underwhelming. Each level looks like they were rushed and lack detail and have a generic look.

The music is the typical Tekken hyper techno music, very upbeat and it suits the mood of the game. There is also some rock and classical music fused in there and the Hidden Retreat stage has hilarious yodeling music which is just insane. Laughing

Overall, Tekken 6 is great addition to the series with it's huge cast of characters, good graphics and lively music. Every fighting fan should check this game out, it's probably the best Tekken game in the series yet!

    Misfit's Rating: 8.5/10

Thanks everyone for reading my review, I wasn't expecting this much response!

A-Thon X: I use my 360 controller, but I have to use the joystick. The D-pad is so damn inaccurate! lol

SweetIceCream: Heck yes, this game rocks!

BigNeen004: You should definitely pick up Tekken 6, it's so worth it.

BEN: The leader of GoG commented on my review?! I'm honored! And I may have a review coming about a game with lots of zombie mayhem and PILLS!

Great review! I'm quite a fan of Tekken, (Tekken Tag is still my favorite, but I have not played T6 yet) but I cannot convince myself to drop the cash for this one. I'll probably pick it up used down the road, there is just too much other goodness out there right now!

Sounds like the real meat of this game is in the online multi-player, which is becoming very common place. I have to admit, i've never played a Tekken game, but i guess i need to. Do you use a Controller or one of those Joystick platforms when you play?
