  1. GoblinBob Want a Job as a Designer?

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Mar 22 2008

    Start now.

    Don't know where to start?
Being a Game Designer is being a professional problem solver, and
figuring things out is what you'll spend most of your time doing, so anything & everything you can do, try, experiment with or even fail at ...is valuable experience.

Don't Wait for someone to show you "what to do" or "how to do it".

(Everything will change tomorrow anyway). When we're hiring, I am usually more interested in what applicants have done "on their own" than what type of degree they have (if any).

Game Design degrees are getting better, but some still leave a lot to be desired when it comes to real-world applications. Still, they're a great source of concentrated information, and perhaps more importantly, a terrific source of like-minded individuals.

Because although it is possible to do it all yourself, real world game development is a team process! The best way to understand what it takes to make a game is to surround yourself with people with different talents, disciplines, and ideas and work together to get something done!

Your innate abilities are important, of course, because no one will hire you just because you really love games. But whether you lean towards Art, Programming, Music, Writing or a combination of Creative Skills... keep learning. Because if you don't find learning & discovery enjoyable, you probably won't succeed.

    "What Tools should I use?"
Common question, but the truth is: it really doesn't matter much. Basic tools are enough: tools change constantly and if you can learn one you can learn them all. Check out Garage Games' or 3DGameStudio's low cost, user friendly 2D & 3D "game engines." Play with Level Editors, Paint, 2D & 3D Animation and 3D Modeling Programs.

Create whatever you can, and don't be afraid to start simple... a crude game thats playable is often a much more impressive portfolio item than a grandiose concept that never got off the ground.

Thats all for now, I'm getting sleepy...
    Good Luck
