Player Chronicle -- Posted on Aug 22 2010

The End Game Center in Charlottesville, VA held a series of tournaments yesterday, headlined by Super Street Fighter 4. I went into the tournament thinking, I'm just a pot donor. I'm not hardcore into the game, but I'm decent and I enjoy watching high-level play, so I went. Hung out there with Kat and Alex from the UVA Gamer's Club. Hadn't met Alex before, but he was a real cool guy, and we ended up getting matched up in the first round. Again, I wasn't expecting to win anything, I really expected to lose in the Winner's Bracket and then in the first round of Loser's and watch the rest. Well, Alex played Blanka, one of my character's best matchups (I'm a Balrog main), but for some reason I'm really bad at it. I took game 1, he took game 2. In the third game, I very LUCKILY chipped him out in the first round to give me a ton of momentum. I dominated him the second round of game 3 and took the match.

I was pretty pumped to get a win, but it wouldn't last too long. My next match was against the tournament organizer Havitz. We play the same character, so I knew a little about what to do and how to play it, but he was definitely better than I am. I was able to take a couple of rounds, but he 2-0'ed me. My next match was against a guy I didn't know, a Guile player. I went into the match thinking he'd be pretty good, but I was wrong. He was decent, but I was definitely better than he was. He didn't stand a chance in the first match, and in the second match he switched to Balrog, and so we did another Balrog ditto. No problems this time for me though, took him out fairly easily.

By this time, I was yet again pumped. 2-1 so far, when I was expecting to be immediately eliminated. My next match was immediate, and I had to play another Guile player. This time though, the guy was pretty good. He was able to react to my moves immediately, and counter them with his own. I was able to take one round out of the 5 we played, but he very easily 2-0'ed me. If I had played more patiently, I might have been able to take a full game, but that's all in hindsight now.

Overall, I was pretty happy with what I had done. Again, expecting to get bodied, I was able to get a couple of wins. I'll definitely be at the one they're holding next month, along with casuals on Wednesday nights. Good shit to everyone I played, and to Moose for winning the tournament, and Foomy for getting second.
