  1. RyuBlitz IMAX: A Retrospect

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Feb 20 2008

Well, as you all know, the GoG IMAX tournament was last Saturday. Needless to say, there was a huge turnout. Not only were there a ton of competitors, but there were way more spectators than I expected. There were are few little glitches, but that's to be expected in an inaugural tournament.

For this chronicle, I think I'll tag a couple of different topics...

    Guitar Hero!:
    ------------------
I was very impressed with the turnout of Guitar Hero competitors. We had people coming from all over the place! I know there was at least two GHers from Omaha, and there were a couple from Eastern Iowa. To see so many dfferent people, guys and girls, young and old, coming together playing Guitar Hero was an awesome feeling.

I was also very glad to see that everyone was keeping a pretty good additude, despite some of the delays that were caused by the bracket mess. Thanks again, everyone, for putting up with my bad handwriting and vague explanations on the GH brackets, btw.

The skill level of the whole competition was very high. The fact that I won still astounds me, as I know there are at least a few people there that could beat me easily. I think the key part for my winning was the performance bonus, which leads me to my next topic...

    Performance Bonus:
    ------------------
Here's my question for all of the GH players here (especially the Experts): Why didn't you guys move around more? You guys all look so, well, bored when you're just standing there staring at the screen. If you're going to play the guitar for an audience, you might as well have some fun with it, especially when there's a reward for doing so. Jump up and down, do a few windmills, do a power slide! You'd be amazed how much more fun the game can be when you let out your inner rock star. Smile

    IMAX:
    ------------------
I just want to say, whoever decided to leave early instead of sticking around for the finals, you missed a great show. The Madden championship was an awesome game, the light shows and performances for Guitar Hero were awesome, and the Halo matches were entertaining, to say the least. Definitely stick around at the next tournament if you can.

Well, class is starting, so I better wrap this up. Feel free to share any questions, comments or critiques you have; I l'd be happy to hear them.

    -Zach

Man, it was ridiculous to meet so many people at my skill level or even better in a few cases! :X
Especially like some of those little kids, like the one who made it all the way to the semis & unfortunately lost out to me on The Way It Ends.

But it was awesome meeting you there, Brandon & the other Zack too. Taylor, Matt, Justin, Matt's friend whose name I don't remember, lol.

    Good times.
The next tourney that rolls around that I decide to compete in, ya'll better be ready cuz' I'm going even further, believe it!
Even if I get whipped by you or Palpatine or Dynafire in the finals, I'd love to freaking make it to a final match.

I think the performance bonus is important. Anyone can sit in a chair and play or stand and not move around and play. How entertaining would a Velvet Revolver concert be if Slash just sat in a Lazy Boy and played or stood motionless? I think for Guitar Hero that your playing ability is only half of your performance. Your ability to make the game more difficult by dancing around and wowing the crowd is every bit as important.

Nice chronicle, Zach, and congrats again for winning the tournament! Sorry Zach M and I had to take off early, but I didn't want to get stuck in Des Moines all weekend.

I agree with Leftover's point that you normally don't do that stuff at home, and that's partially why I didn't do much as far as performing. The other part is that I was incredibly nervous. My legs were amazingly shaky/wobbly round one, and I was more worried about just staying on my feet than anything. That nervousness wore off a bit for the 2nd round, but I think I was still pretty boring to watch. Hopefully next time I can push out that "Must get teh high scorez!1!!" mentality and put on a good show. We'll see at the next tournament, I guess.

Well said indeed.... You did a great job on those brackets Ryu, especially when I brought that dad and his kid to you! Dynamite drop in by giving up your spot for him Smile

IDK about the style bonus.... We'll have to take a good look at how that effected ppls attitudes b4 the next tourny. I think a lot of ppl were turned off by it....

That's a good point, leftover. I guess I also have a bit of bias in my opinion, because I'm a guitarist in a band and used to moving around and rocking out. Hmm...

I think the reason most people didn't move around, is just simply that they don't do that when they play at home. I know that when I play at home, I put my full concentration into the song. And when you are in the middle of a big multiplier or star power, you don't want to do anything to mess that up.

    Just my oppinion
