Player Chronicle -- Posted on Sep 06 2008

Just wanted to vent about my three red light xbox, also known as the ring of death. It looks cool on the elite, but does me no good since i cannot play......for now. I had it in a well ventilated place, away from other electronics, and had the room temp to about 65. Still my box persnickety with me. Does anybody know why?

It's a combination of various factors that cause this, all related to the heat generated by both the CPU and GPU inside the 360.

The GPU was designed in-house to try to save money and the design isn't that efficient, with a lot of extraneous heat energy given off that other manufacturers (ATI or nVidia) could have avoided altogether. The money MS saved in initial development is all squandered now because of their 3-year extended warranty.

The 360's case, while aesthetically pleasing, isn't very good as dissipating all this heat either.

What happens during the red ring is that your console gets so hot inside the solder points on the CPU, GPU (or both) become liquid. Unequal pressure on the X-clamps holding on the heat sink causes some of the chips leads to disconnect from the mainboard.

You could put a 360 in a vacuum sealed room and it would still fail you eventually! haha.

Don't be discouraged, you'll have a new 360 in around 2-3 weeks...until that one fails you Laughing
