  1. BIGMercenary Facebook vs WoW: A Discussion

Player Chronicle -- Posted on Jun 03 2010

I've had this thought mulling around in my head for a while now, I've tried posting it on my Facebook wall in hopes to start a discussion, only to be laughed at and misunderstood by "friends" who just didn't get it.

    The thought is:
Someone can sit on Facebook for HOURS, playing Farmville, talking to people on chat, and generally geeking out.
Meanwhile, someone can sit at their computer for HOURS, playing World of Warcraft, talking to their guildmates, and generally geeking out.

I've known several people who have had to force themselves away from Facebook for spending too much time on it.
I've also known several people who had to be removed by force from playing WoW due to health and mental reasons.

My whole point is that in either case you have the chance to be social. Many will argue otherwise and say that you don't know the other players in WoW. But you can get to know them. Isn't that the point of social networking: to become SOCIAL?
People in guilds, and even random strangers, in WoW can become your friends, you can conversate with them on other websites. How is that any different from "Friends of Friends" or random friend invites on Facebook? (Although you never get fake porn profiles on WoW.)
World of Warcraft can be seen as social networking, just inside of a game, and Facebook can be just as addicting.

Any thoughts or ideas on this topic?

And I know this was mentioned in CirrusEpix' video "The Only Thing I Know," but consider it as a topic of "The Lesser of Two Evils."

I see what you're trying to connect with this thought. I think overall, it's the growing interest in SOCIAL gaming.
